History of the Virtual United States Air Force

By Robert Phillips, Founder – vUSAF

The Virtual United States Air Force (vUSAF) is one of the longest-running and most influential military organizations in the virtual aviation community. Since its founding in 1999, the organization has remained committed to realism, professionalism, operational discipline, and education within the world of online military flight simulation.

What began as a small vision shared among aviation enthusiasts grew into a globally recognized Special Operations organization that helped shape military realism and operational standards across the virtual aviation community.

Historical Timeline

Key eras in the development of vUSAF.

1998

Origins of a Vision

The idea for vUSAF began after Robert Phillips discovered Microsoft Flight Simulator 98, online aviation, and SATCO. His military family background and interest in disciplined military aviation helped shape the vision for a more structured virtual organization.

1999

Research and Foundation

From January through August 1999, the founding team researched military procedures, airspace coordination, communications, training standards, and professional conduct. By November 1999, the original vUSAF structure, training framework, and website were complete.

2000–2001

UNAF and Early Growth

vUSAF joined with the Virtual United States Navy and Virtual United States Coast Guard to form the United Nations Air Forces, a coalition built around realism, training, and Special Operations professionalism.

2002–Present

Operations and Continuing Legacy

Major exercises such as Operation Joshua and Operation Northern Fury helped prove that realistic military operations could coexist safely within civilian online aviation networks. That standard continues to shape vUSAF today.

The Foundation of a Vision

The Virtual United States Air Force has remained committed to realism, operational discipline, training, and education throughout the evolving world of virtual military aviation.

The origins of the vUSAF trace back to September 1998, when I purchased my first copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator 98. Shortly afterward, I connected to the internet for the first time and discovered an entirely new world of online aviation. The ability to fly in real time alongside other people from around the world was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

As downloadable aircraft, scenery, sounds, and custom cockpit panels became increasingly available, the possibilities within flight simulation appeared limitless.

Everything changed when I discovered SATCO — the Simulated Air Traffic Control Organization. SATCO was the first truly large-scale online aviation network I encountered, bringing together pilots and controllers into a live shared environment.
